Decommissioning Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power Station: Mission Impossible?
MONTPELIER, VT — What are the challenges for decommissioning the Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power Station, permanently closed since December 2014? A public event in Montpelier, VT on Wednesday, June 3, 2015 will answer some of these questions. The event will take place from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the Bethany United Church of Christ, 115 Main Street, Montpelier, VT. The event is free and open to the public.
The evening will include a documentary film screening about reactor decommissioning and a presentation by Arnie Gundersen of Fairewinds Associates, Inc.
The presentations and public discussion will focus on the many challenges associated with current plans to decommission Vermont Yankee and the long-term management of the radioactive waste from the shuttered reactor.
The evening will begin with the 51-minute film, “Decommissioning Our Nuclear Power Stations: Mission Impossible?” Produced in 2012 by Bernard Nicolas for France’s Arte TV network, the subtitled documentary takes a hard look at the status of decommissioning nuclear power plants in France and Germany. Nicolas also looks at the implications of decommissioning reactors in the United States.
Nicolas and his crew visited the high-level radioactive waste dry storage cask site at the dismantled Maine Yankee nuclear power station in Wiscasset, ME. They also traveled to and filmed at the then still operating Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power Station shortly after the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission had granted the operator a 20-year license extension.
Arnie Gundersen of Fairewinds Associates, Inc. will present a summary of findings and recommendations from his company’s new special report on the decommissioning of Vermont Yankee.
Vermont Yankee is part of a growing bow wave of U.S. reactor closures and decommissioning operations troubled by lack of federal oversight, outdated technical and cost analyses and growing decommissioning fund shortfalls.
There will be an opportunity for Q&A and comments at the end of the program.
The event is hosted by Beyond Nuclear, Vermont Yankee Decommissioning Alliance and Vermont Citizen Action Network.
