Wondering what you can do to close and replace Vermont Yankee? Below are ways for you and your community to get involved! To get further details on any of the below actions, contact Chad Simmons at 802.377.7403 or cbtossin@yahoo.com.
1- Write Letters to the Editor and Send to Various Newspapers
-We need dozens of letters in every month. THIS IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT!
-Commit to writing one letter.
-Write to your local paper or to one of the statewide papers: Rutland Herald, Bennington Banner, Times Argus. For the full list, click here.
-Follow-up with a phone call the same day to the Editor of the paper.
-Send a copy to the corresponding legislator.
2- Send Letters to Your Electric Company
-One of the most powerful things we can all do (no matter where we live and in addition to using less electricity) is to demand from our electric utility companies that they stop purchasing power from Entergy and, instead, buy electricity from local, renewable electricity suppliers.
-When you send in your next payment, include a letter requesting they not buy power from Entergy Nuclear.
3- Support Local, Renewable Electricity Projects
-Several renewable energy projects are being proposed in southern VT, western MA and eastern NH.
-Contact your local regulators and voice your support for these projects.
-Attend planning and regulatory meetings/hearings regarding these proposals. Show your support and suggest solutions for making these projects better.
-Supporting local, efficiency and renewable projects is JUST AS IMPORTANT as closing VY.
-Go to “The Green Side” page to learn about these projects.
4- Support Legislative and Gubernatorial
-While the Safe & Green Campaign cannot endorse candidates, you can!
-Support candidates this summer and fall that support closing VY and aggressively pursuing
conservation, efficiency and renewable solutions.
-Contact their campaigns and get involved!
Possible Talking Points
- The horrific BP oil spill that is continuing to decimate the gulf coast and beyond is yet another indication that we need to immediately stop toxic, polluting forms of energy production. Regulators cozy with big polluters such as nuclear, coal and oil are culpable.
-Entergy misled VT legislators and regulators about the details of their underground piping system that carries radioactive liquid.
-Entergy refuses to fully fund the decommissioning fund, which is necessary to cleaning up the site Vermont Yankee is located on. It is currently estimated it will cost over $1 billion and this may increase due to the tritium leaks.
