The Safe & Green Campaign is an urgent, grassroots-people-powered effort to close Entergy Nuclear’s Vermont Yankee facility and replace it through conservation, efficiency and renewable solutions—Moving us towards a truly “Safe and Green” energy future.
The campaign focuses on public education, outreach, and organizing among people in the 50 towns in VT, MA, and NH within 20 miles of the reactor—that is, the people most in harm’s way whose lives, property, and natural environment are most at risk. Because those of us living closest to the reactor are the most endangered, we have a special credibility and a unique responsibility to LET OUR VOICES BE HEARD! – by our neighbors throughout the region, the media and our elected officials.
During the 2010 Vermont legislative session, Safe & Green played a major role in successfully moving the legislature to vote in favor of closing Vermont Yankee on schedule. This was a monumental step forward for clean energy advocates and grassroots democracy. While this was a major victory for the movement, the work is far from over. Now we must hold the Entergy Corporation accountable and make sure they pay for the full cost of clean-up. Additionally, the Louisiana-based corporation continues to pour money into PR and lobbying in the hopes they can reverse the will of the people. We must continue the struggle.
Our goal is to encourage town residents and elected officials to speak out publicly AGAINST Entergy’s requested 20-year continued operation, FOR “safe and green” energy alternatives, and FOR the right of the people, especially those most affected, to determine their own energy future.
The campaign was created by a group of concerned citizens in the tri-state area and sponsored by representatives of three organizations—Citizens Awareness Network (CAN), New England Coalition on Nuclear Pollution (NEC), and Nuclear Free Vermont (NFV). A coordinating committee meets regularly.
HOW CAN I GET INVOLVED?
We need people to Join the Safe & Green Campaign to distribute literature in your town, help do canvassing and tabling in central and northern VT, contact elected officials, participate in nuclear-free energy vigils and demonstrations, make banners, contribute artwork, write letters.
